- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup (about 4 ounces) buttermilk
- 1 1/4 cup (10 ounces) hot water
- 4 egg whites
- 1 cup (about 7 ounces) sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar or juice of 1/2 lemon
